City fiscal responsibility is something every taxpayer benefits from. The current city budget debt service is a 17.1% share of the General Fund. This is a 3.1% increase from 2015. What could we do with an additional 50 million dollars today as we recover from COVID? We need to pay attention to what budgets are increasing, actually benefiting from the increased debt service and where our needs are. All the work the city is doing is good work, but is it necessary work and necessary that it is all done now? Can we sustain this rate of spending? In light of COVID-19 should we be looking at anticipated changes in what cities will look like in the future as we plan? As Alder this would be a high priority for me; to pay attention to the opportunity costs involved with rising debt service.
